TO PARENTS, GUARDIANS AND STUDENTS
ANOTHER SET OF STANDARDS COME TO MAINE: "THE COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS"
WHICH PROPOSES THEIR STANDARDS
"provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy."
Dyscalculia is a difficulty in learning mathematics which is thought to affect 3-6% of the population and may be due, at least in part, to a dysfunction of areas of the brain that represent numerical information. While dyscalculia has been studied for many years in the educational field, cognitive neuroscience research on dyscalculia is only just beginning.
Most of us take it for granted that math works—that scientists can devise formulas to describe subatomic events or that engineers can calculate paths for spacecraft.
So Is math invented or discovered? A leading astrophysicist suggests that the answer to the millennia-old question is both.
IMPORTANT MESSAGE: DUE TO THE UPGRADE OF GEOGEBRA TO 4.X MANY OF MY GEOGEBRA FILES ON THIS SITE ARE NOT LOADING. PLEASE BE PATIENT WHILE I UPDATE MY FILES. IF POSSIBLE LET ME KNOW WHICH GEOGEBRA FILES ARE NOT WORKING.

Hi all,
Just a quick note on the MATH SOFTWARE section above. A number of people have asked me "Are you being paid to promote any of the software in the MATH SOFTWARE section?" The answer is an emphatic, "No!" This site is for my students, parents, guardians and colleagues. I earn no money from this site nor plan to. I support this site with my own funds and personal time. If I had more money available I would be testing many other software programs that are available to students and teachers: are there any kind souls who might consider providing me a grant to do such a thing?
Other than Geogebra which is open source sofware, I have purchased all the software in the MATH SOFTWARE section. None of the software was donated to me by any of the software developer's companies for review purposes or use. I have personally used all the software and I still use all the software though some software more than others. If anyone wants my personal opinion of the software please feel free to contact me.
Please do not contact me with specific questions about how to use any of this software unless you are a student of mine. I don't have time to answer the many questions that people tend to have - my advice is to read the help notes that come with the software.

UNIVERSITY ALGEBRA CLASS AND WORKSHEETS TO
PREPARE FOR THIS CLASS
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's important that you understand that a university algebra class is more rigorous than a high school algebra class. If you plan to take a university algebra class it will be in your best interest to work your way through these prerequisite worksheets including a Comprehensive Review, Exit Exam Review and a Practice Exit Exam.
These worksheets and answer keys will also be useful for an Algebra 1 Part 1 and Algebra 1 Part 2 class.
There is also a full course of University Algebra in pdf format on this page.

WHAT ARE CONICS?
---------------------------------------------------
Conics, or conic sections, are the intersection of a plane with an infinite double cone. If that plane cuts both cones, it is a hyperbola. If it is parallel to the edge of the cone, you get a parabola. If neither is the case, it is an ellipse. The ellipse is also a circle if the plane is perpendicular to the altitude of the cone.
Note that none of these are the case if the plane passes through the vertex of the cone.

Then left click the equal sign.
eg. 2) In the above field type:
expand (3x-2)(4x+7)
Then left click the equal sign.
eg. 3) In the above field type:
solve 3x^2+2x-4=0 for x
Then left click the equal sign.
eg. 4) In the above field type:
together 1/(x+3)+3/(2x+7)
Then left click the equal sign.
eg. 5) In the above field type:
simplify (x^2+5x+6)/(x+3)
Then left click the equal sign.
eg. 6) In the above field type:
plot x^2, x=0..5
Then left click the equal sign.
Copy and paste the following symbols if you need them: π or θ
Use the caret symbol for a power, i.e. x2 can be written as x^2 and roots can be written with fractional powers.

SAT STRUGGLES: NUMBER THEORY
---------------------------------------------------------------
Please keep in mind that the all students in Maine are part of the MAINE HIGH SCHOOL ASSESSMENT ( The Maine SAT Initiative). Students are asked to perform to a particular standard or state funding can be impacted. The SAT MATH area includes a Number Theory section which gives students a great deal of difficulty.
So what does it take to perform well on the Number Theory section? There is NO one easy path and no instructional practices in and of themselves that will guarantee that a student will perform well on the Number Theory portion of the SAT. But, it is an absolute MUST that a student understand and memorize a number of arithmetic facts that demand time, effort and concentration - in effect, hard work - if a student is going to perform well.
LEARN THESE NUMBER THEORY FACTS IF YOU WANT TO PERFORM
WELL ON THE NUMBER THEORY SECTION OF THE MATH SAT

WHAT IS CURRENT IN BRAIN RESEARCH?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vilayanur S Ramachandran is Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition and professor with the Psychology Department and the Neurosciences Program at the University of California, San Diego. He is also Adjunct Professor of Biology at the Salk Institute. Professor Ramachandran's work has concentrated on investigating phenomena such as phantom limbs, anosognosia or denial of paralysis, Capgras syndrome, and anorexia nervosa. V.S.R. has written a number of fascinating books on brain functioning The research from these books has led to a deeper understanding of the nature of mathematical and metaphorical comprehension. Also consider watching the online videos on mathematics and brain research that I have linked here.
Below are the Reith Lecture's V.S.R. gave in 2003 in 5 parts.

WHAT BROWSERS YOU WILL NEED HERE
-------------------------------------------------------------------
First, it is important that you have the proper web browser in order to use all the interactive features available here.
If you are a windows and/or mac user consider FIREFOX which will work with all the features here.
Internet Explorer is buggy and will not work well with the LIVE MATH modules that are embedded at this site.
